ROMANIAN PROJECT

Since we have retired in 2001, we have been making at least one trip per year to
Oradea, Romania. We usually spend most of month with the First Baptist Church of
Oradea. Joseph Simon, the pastor of the church, has become a dear and trusted
friend over these seven years. I spend the time there teaching in the seminary and
Bible school, and preaching in the churches. What a joy!

Over three years ago we partnered with Pastor Simon to help raise funds for the
Rogerious Mission of the First Baptist Church. They have a congregation of about
one hundred baptized believers, but no place in which to worship or perform
ministry. They have been able to borrow a building for two hours a week—an hour
on Sunday afternoon and an hour on Thursday evening. In spite of this limitation,
God has continued to add new people to their number.

The thing that makes our partnership with Joseph Simon so important is that
Romania is still recovering from 40 years of Communism. The average income of a
worker is about $200.00 per month and the cost of living is extremely high. (They
pay more than $5.00 for a gallon of gasoline if they can afford a car.) They need
our help!

The congregation is made of Hungarian people. The Hungarians are a sizable
minority in this city of about 225,000 people. The new church that we are building is
located in a part of the city with many high rise apartments—at least 80,000 people
live in these apartments. Most of these will be within walking distance of the church.
Due to the encouragement and help of our friends at UpReach Ministry
International, we have made good progress toward the construction of this building.
Joseph Simon has come to the states several times, and we have visited with
churches and individuals. The Lord has prospered our efforts. More than
$900,000.00 has been raised, and the building is almost complete.

We still have a few significant needs:

  • We need money to install the heating-air conditioning unit.

  • We need money for a sound system. (The building will seat 500
people so - the sound system will be important.)

  • We need money for some furniture.

  • We still need a few other items, but the Lord continues to provide.
The - work on the building has not stopped since we began.

  • We invite you to pray for this project and even to help us finish the
project. You can make a contribution by sending a designated gift to:
